Representatives from local tourism and trader organisations, Councillors and Council staff attended the launch of the Bass Coast Shire StreetLife Project on Monday 14 October at the Bass Coast Civic Centre, Wonthaggi.

StreetLife is an initiative of the Victorian Government and there are 34 StreetLife projects in communities across the Victoria, all addressing the individual needs of that community or region.

"How I stopped worrying and learned to love Bass Coast" is the title of the local StreetLife Project.

Margaret Murray, StreetLife Coordinator for Bass Coast Shire, said that the aim of the project is to support the growth of small business. Margaret will be working with eight local trader and tourism organisations in Bass Coast.

"StreetLife promotes local economic development strategies that encourage small business to grow, and helps economic performance," said Margaret. "It brings community, business and all levels of government together to set and achieve realistic goals."

At the launch, Margaret explained that the anticipated outcomes of the local StreetLife Project are:

  • Improve skills through training and mentoring programs
  • Establish and support business networks
  • Encourage and promote entrepreneurial activities
  • Identify and grow local business champions
  • Strengthen local economy by attracting new business and creating jobs
  • Encourage multi-location and regional joint ventures as well as multicultural business development
  • Develop small business and community resources
  • Improve knowledge of government services and resources.

"StreetLife also provides opportunities for organisations to become business like and to plan for the future, not just for the next twelve months," said Margaret.

"One of the first things we are trying to achieve is to increase the membership of trader and tourism organisations by 10 per cent in the first year, and develop marketing and business plans for these organisations," she said.

"The project is still in its early days but we’ve already started working with local groups to set goals for their organisations," said Margaret.

"How I stopped worrying and learned to love Bass Coast" is a joint initiative of the Victorian Government StreetLife program and the Bass Coast Shire Council.
