Wellington Makes It Happen In Youth WeekMove over oldies – make way for the youngsters By Karen Gregory - 13th August 2002 - Back to News Young people across Wellington will be celebrating Youth Week Victoria, next week, and they’ve lined up a heap of events across the Shire.
In keeping with this year’s theme, "Make it Happen," from 12 – 18 August, there’ll be talkfests, fundraisers and a FreeZA event – and a chance to begin production of a youth newsletter.
Wellington Mayor Malcolm Hole will attend a Youth Forum on Monday to listen to young people’s points of view.
"Council is keen to meet the needs of the young people of Wellington. If we can make the Shire ‘youth friendly’ we can encourage them to live and work here in an attractive environment," said Mayor Hole.
"I’m looking forward to hearing about their plans and hopes for the future and to see how we, as a Council, can help."
The week’s events program includes:
- Monday 12 August – approximately 200 school students will attend a Youth Forum at the Memorial Hall in Sale. The forum has been organised/sponsored by Here for Life and will enable young people to have their say on local issues.
- Thursday 15 August – Young people aged 14 – 21 interested in becoming involved in a Youth Newsletter are invited to a meeting in the Conference Room at Sale College Senior Campus, Macalister Street, Sale at 5.30pm. For further information contact Wellington Shire’s Youth Development Officer Jodie Pullman on 51 423 340.
- Friday 16 August – Streets of Harmony and Spigot are holding an underage FReeZA event "Picture This, " featuring Blue Line Medic, Oxygen and Non Existent Bob. The event will run from 7.30 – 11.30pm. Tickets are available at Leading Edge Sale, Sale College (Senior Campus) or Maffra Secondary College. Buses will be running from Maffra to Stratford to Sale and from Heyfield to Rosedale to Sale. More bus information can be obtained from ticket sale venues.
- Friday 16 August – Wear your boots for National Boot Day: National Boot Day aims to increase public awareness of youth suicide that occurs in rural and regional communities across Australia. The campaign involves Australian Rural Youth Inc. and Victorian (Maffra) Young Farmers, promoting a positive message of care and support to rural young people.
Through public and corporate donations, the campaign aims to raise money for the delivery of suicide prevention and education workshops specifically for young people living in rural and regional Australia. These workshops will enable young people to recognise suicide-warning signs, promote strategies for help and develop coping skills. For more information about National Boot Day please contact Alecia Boys on 51 423 435.
