Wellington Council Welcomes Students

Students invited to learn about local government

By Karen Gregory - 23rd July 2002 - Back to News

School students from around Wellington are being invited to learn about local government through Wellington Shire Council.

Mayor Malcolm Hole is keen to encourage schools to send parties of students on a tour of the Civic Centre offices so that youngsters can gain early experience and understanding of Council operations.

Recently, children from Sale 545 Primary School visited the Civic Centre as part of a lesson about their parents’ place of work.

"As quite a few of the students’ parents work here in Council, we were delighted to show them around and to let them see where and how their parents spend their working day," said Mayor Hole.

"It was a great day for all of us. The children enjoyed the chance to see over the offices and we had a wonderful time showing them around.

"It is important that we make sure our students are given the opportunity to learn about all levels of government. Council is the sector of government that has the most direct day-to-day impact on our lives, so here in Wellington we are going to offer an ‘open house’ to encourage schools to visit us."

Anyone interested in organising a party of school students to tour Council offices should contact Karen Gregory, Public Relations and Marketing Officer on 5142 3458.
