Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, urged citizens to attend one of the three Council sponsored breakfasts and join with others in the community, celebrating Australia’s national day with music and fun; and to ‘fly the flag’ on Australia Day, in shops and homes, in celebration.
The free barbecue breakfasts will commence at 8am with official flag raising ceremonies at 9am. Cr Hanning advised those attending any of the breakfasts to take along a folding chair and/or blanket, advising that it would help to make Australia Day a more enjoyable experience for all citizens and visitors.
There will be free entry to the Gippsland Heritage Park on Friday morning for Moe’s Australia Day Breakfast celebration, where Paddy O’Dowds band will provide the entertainment. Morwell’s celebration will take place on the Town Common near the Community Playground, where the Latrobe Community Orchestra Band will entertain; and the City of Traralgon Band will entertain at Traralgon’s celebration being held in the Kay Street Gardens.
The Edison Mission Energy Australia Day Heart Walk will be a feature of the Traralgon celebration, with the Latrobe Community Health Service inviting citizens to participate in a four kilometre walk, starting at 9.30am from the Kay Street Gardens, with a warm-up for prospective walkers commencing five minutes prior. Further information on the Edison Mission Energy Australia Day Heart Walk can be obtained from Annette on 5136 5439.
One of the highlights of Australia Day will be Latrobe City’s Civic Celebration being held at Kernot Hall, Morwell at 1pm.
Seventeen Latrobe citizens from nine different cultural background including the United Kingdom, Italy, Sri Lanka, the Republic of South Africa, and Bosnia –Herzegovina will be presented with their Australian Citizenship certificates at this year’s Australia Day Citizenship ceremony.
The presentation of Latrobe City’s Australia Day Awards will also feature at the Civic Celebration. The names of the recipients of the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year, are withheld until the official revelation on the day, so the announcement of this year’s Australia Day Award recipients will be a closely watched event.
Once again, there is free admission to the Civic Celebration at Kernot Hall, and Cr Hanning has urged Latrobe Citizens to attend. Entertainment will be provided by Ragwort, Thistles and Other Noxious Weeds during the Civic Celebration, and the ceremonies will be followed by afternoon tea at 2:30pm. Contact Latrobe City on 1300 367 700 for any further information on the Civic Celebration.
Latrobe City has also announced that there will be free entry to Council’s three outdoor pools on Australia Day from 12noon if the temperature is forecast to be over 23°C, with a free sausage sizzle being held at each venue.
The Moe, Yallourn North and Traralgon outdoor swimming pools will each be open until 6pm, subject to the normal conditions for extended hours in the evening if the weather on Australia Day turns out to be hot.
“This is an opportunity for everyone in Latrobe to enjoy three of the community’s best facilities absolutely free. Perhaps Australia Day is the perfect time for this to happen, as it is traditionally a time when many of us take time out to relax and reflect on the freedom and opportunities we are able to enjoy as Australians,” Cr Hanning said.
