Kilcunda Bass Football Club recently secured a $60,000 grant from Sports and Recreation Victoria’s Country Football Netball Program towards the installation of a drainage system at the Bass Recreation Reserve.

The local community through the Kilcunda Bass Football Club identified safety issues at the Bass Recreation Reserve and have been working together with Council on this project since 2010.

Bass Coast Shire Council Recreation and Leisure Planner, Ella Angarane, said we are pleased to have secured this funding, so that the project can now go ahead. The expected total cost of the new drainage system will be over $185,000.

"The project will include significant contributions from Bass Coast Shire Council, Bendigo Community Bank at San Remo, Kilcunda Bass Football Club, and Kilcunda Bass Cricket Club," said Ms Angarane.

Ms Angarane explained that due to the lack of drainage, the oval was deemed unsafe for play in 2010 with one of Kilcunda Bass’s home rounds forced to be relocate to Wonthaggi.

"With the help of Council’s parks and gardens staff the ground was in better condition in 2011 but the club asked to relocate training sessions late in the season due to the wet condition of the ground.

"This new drainage will provide a fantastic boost for all reserve users including the cricket club and allow safe use for 12 months of the year. The executive of the Club have shown great commitment to the drainage project, and the announcement caps off a fantastic year for the Club," continued Ms Angarane.

Luke Hill, Kilcunda Bass Football Club President has been involved with the project from the start.

"We’ve been working in partnership with Council over the past 12 months to secure the funding for this project so we are ecstatic to know that it’s going to happen. We’ll be looking forward to setting a firm timetable for works with Council as soon as we can," said Mr Hill.

Ms Angarane said that Bass Coast Shire Council officers met last week with Kilcunda Bass Football Club executive to discuss undertaking works next year. We expect the works to be undertaken in 2012 but no definite dates have been set. The works will be scheduled to ensure there is least disruption to users of the reserve," Ms Angarane said.
