Telstra Proposal To Remove Payphones

Telstra advised the Bass Coast Shire Council this week that it had until 31 July to submit comments on a proposal by Telstra to remove four payphones from the local area.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 23rd June 2006 - Back to News

Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Richard Perry, said that Council will be making a detailed submission, but urged the community to contact Telstra directly.

"We will be forwarding our comments to Telstra on the proposed removal of these payphones, which in our view provide an important service to the community.

"We encourage community members to also contact Telstra to express their own views on this proposal," said Mr Perry.

Telstra advises that the targeted payphones are at:

· 1 Cuttriss St, Inverloch;

· Grand View Gr, Inverloch;

· 19 Hillside Ave, Inverloch; and

· Graham St, Wonthaggi.

Telstra has stated that their reasons for removal include one or more of the following:

· Low patronage or usage over time.

· Complaints from the local community.

· Ongoing cost of maintaining and repairing vandalism.

· Increased uptake of alternative technology e.g. mobile, email and internet.

Telstra also advised that notices regarding the phones’ proposed removal have been posted on the phones for the past three months.
