Hosted by Bass Coast Shire Council, guests were privileged to presentations from leading architects on the role of good design in coastal communities.

Bass Coast Planning Manager, Hannah Duncan-Jones said the forum was very well received.

"Coastal design is an issue that concerns many councils and communities," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"We believe it is very important to have open discussion on this topic to help people understand the issues.

"In our Shire, there are many new homes being built and a considerable amount of development.

"We need to do all we can to ensure that new buildings are well designed and create a sense of place," continued Ms Duncan-Jones.

Three architects addressed the Forum, they were:

  • Shelley Penn, RAIS, Deputy Victorian Government Architect
  • Jennifer Calzini, Principal Policy Officer, Office of the Victorian Government Architect
  • Lucinda McLean, NMBW Architecture Studio

Ms Duncan-Jones said the presenters discussed the role of good design in terms of overall health and well being, as well as examining how design could be used to reflect the values of the community.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin said attending the forum had given him a new perspective on design and planning issues.

"The discussions at the forum made me conscious of leaving a legacy," said Cr Goodwin.

"And that legacy is tied to the quality of design and the quality of our urban spaces."
