Overseas study tour open to students

Do you want to study Australia's wartime history at overseas locations? Read how you can apply, today.

By news@gippsland - 22nd April 2016 - Back to News

Students wishing to study Australia’s wartime history at overseas locations are encouraged to participate in the Victorian Government’s Spirit of ANZAC Prize.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said students would be asked to consider the impacts World War I had on families of young soldiers.

"The Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize is a unique opportunity for students to participate in an overseas study tour to locations that are important to Australia’s wartime history, while also reflecting upon those Australians who serve our nation," Mr Northe said.

In addition to the overseas tour, a group of regional finalists will participate in a study tour to Canberra, where they will visit key sites of national significance including the Australian War Memorial.

Mr Northe said Lavalla Catholic College student, Isis Tyler, was one of 22 students selected for the tour of Gallipoli for ANZAC Day this year.

"Isis was the sixth Lavalla Catholic College representative to receive the opportunity of a lifetime of an overseas study tour," he said.

"Whilst St Pauls Anglican Grammar student, Lily Van Berkel, will visit the Australian War Memorial as part of the same program later this year."

Students can choose to study one of two themes:

  • What would it have been like to have grown up in a family directly affected by World War I? What was the impact on women? On the community? And most of all, on the expectations and responsibilities of young people your age; or
  • What do sources of evidence, including visual art and monuments, suggest about the experiences of the ANZACs during World War I?

Secondary school teachers are also invited to apply to become chaperones.

Applications close on September 23 this year.
