Taylors Road Bridge ready for the twenty-first century

Taylors Road Bridge has been reopened to traffic after a major refurbishment that should take it through the rest of the twenty-first century.

By Latrobe City Council - 2nd August 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Infrastructure Maintenance Manager, Richard Brammall said that when the timber-decked bridge across Traralgon Creek at Koornalla was originally designed, a 30 ton truck was an exceptional load; whereas today, 44 tonne semi trailers are quite common.

"As a consequence, Taylors Road Bridge has been redesigned and strengthened using a method termed ‘composite design’ where a cast insitu reinforced concrete bridge deck is used to strengthen the UB steel beams.

"The steel beams themselves were removed to a painter’s workshop for abrasive blasting and painting with a zinc-in-silicate primer, and then returned to the site prior to the cast insitu reinforced concrete bridge deck being poured," Mr Brammall explained.

"The beam treatment was not a job that could be done on site as the creek environment would have been at risk," he said.

"With any job there is an element of the unexpected, and on removal of the steel beams it was noted that the supporting buttresses either side had moved slightly over the years while subjected to soil pressures, and they required additional pinning.

"While this added to the complexity of the task and length of time needed to undertake the work, the resulting job is now completed and the bridge has been reopened to traffic.

Councillor Bob Smith said that while traffic counts for the structure were relatively low for a bridge in the municipality, approximately 75 vehicles a day, the bridge not only serviced the needs of local residents, but also periodic timber traffic from the Strzlecki plantations.

"I’m sure the community welcomes having Taylors Road Bridge back in operation and the fact that at least during their own lifetimes, there is unlikely to be a need for the bridge to be taken out of service for major work again," Cr Smith said

Cr Smith said that the existing timber bridge barriers have also been replaced with a steel barrier railing, and a steel beam guard fence has been installed on the bridge approaches.

"The resulting structure provides a much needed safer environment for vehicles, cyclists and equestrians crossing Traralgon Creek at Koornalla," Cr Smith said.

The works on Taylors Road Bridge were undertaken by the City’s contractor Hourigan & Walsh Pty Ltd and were funded from the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
