Glengarry Football Netball Club Enjoys Court Redevelopment

Upgraded courts at the Glengarry Football Netball Club have been officially opened with the redevelopment providing new opportunities for the community to increase use of the facility.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that the project was jointly funded by Council, the State Government and the local community.

"The Glengarry Netball/Tennis Court Redevelopment Committee approached Council in 2010 to discuss a redevelopment of the courts. The project included the reconstruction of four multi-use netball/tennis courts, new fencing and new lighting which will promote increased participation for the community.

"Council contributed $350,000 and the State $75,000 and the local community put in $30,000.

"The community has already made good use of the facilities. The Glengarry Football Netball Club has 100 players training and playing netball on a weekly basis; 165 school children from Glengarry Primary School using the facilities each Friday, and over 100 players from Glengarry Tennis Club looking forward to night tennis now that the lighting is adequate.

"This project continues Council’s commitment to deliver improved recreational facilities across the municipality and credit must go to the Glengarry community who worked collaboratively with Council on the project," Cr Kam said.

Member for Morwell, Russell Northe, said the $50,000 funding injection for the Glengarry Football Netball club to upgrade their netball courts was through the Victorian Government’s revitalised Country Football and Netball Program.

"Prior to the 2010 State Election, the Coalition made a commitment to provide $25,000 to improve the state of the Glengarry tennis courts, and this commitment was honoured on top of the $50,000 for the netball courts.

"With more and more people wanting to get involved at clubs like Glengarry the upgrade of the Glengarry Netball and Tennis courts was vital to ensure these clubs can continue to have the facilities they need to cater for their growing communities," Mr Northe said.

Ward Councillor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said that the Glengarry community had a vision for their facility and it was wonderful to see that it had been achieved.

"To see members of the Glengarry community work together to get this redevelopment off the ground was fantastic. Members of the Glengarry Football Netball Club, the Glengarry Junior Football Club and the Glengarry Recreation Reserve Committee of Management contributed valuable time and energy to this project. The redevelopment is testament to that contribution and it’s pleasing to see that so many people are already using the new facilities," Cr O’Callaghan said.
