It’s all Greek at the Morwell Library on TuesdayMorwell Library will host a day celebrating Greek heritage and culture next Tuesday 30 October, which will culminate in an evening of readings and conversations with Greek born Australian writer, Jim Sakkas. By Latrobe City Council - 25th October 2001 - Back to News Morwell Library will host a day celebrating Greek heritage and culture next Tuesday 30 October, which will culminate in an evening of readings and conversations with Greek born Australian writer, Jim Sakkas. Mr Sakkas will also be present at activities throughout the day.
Latrobe City Chief Librarian, Carole Ingwersen, said ‘Greek Day’ will start with a preschool storytime with an Olympic Games theme at 11am.
"At 1.30pm the Latrobe City Library will officially launch its collection of Greek newspapers, magazines, tapes, videos, DVDs and music celebrating Greek culture. This is just part of the considerable range of material in languages other than English (LOTE), that Council now provides for its citizens to enjoy," Ms Ingwersen said.
"A Greek senior citizens group will visit the library at 3pm to share conversation and afternoon tea with Jim Sakkas; and the accent will be on Greek youth at 4.30pm when they present a collection of Greek song and dance.
"Mr Sakkas, the award winning author of Ilias and Stella’s Place, will present readings from, and discuss his works from 7pm to 8.30pm. Mr Sakkas is presently writing his third novel from autobiographical material and is set to provide a fascinating insight into his writing, editing and publishing experiences," Ms Ingwersen said.
"This is a great opportunity for book enthusiasts, local writers, librarians, teachers and the community to explore Greek culture and meet a leading author," Ms Ingwersen said.
Further information is available from Latrobe City libraries at Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Churchill, or telephone 5175 0274.
