Mayor’s Christmas Message - From Cr Graeme MiddlemissSome Christmas messages are deeply philosophical, some will demand the reader contemplates a particular aspect of humanity, while others discuss the relevance or otherwise of the religious significance of Christmas. By Latrobe City Council - 23rd December 2003 - Back to News Philosophy aside, the festive season in Australia also provides us with the opportunity to close-off our year’s activities and take stock. It is the full-stop that ends the year and provides us with the opportunity to look back and review our achievements. Perhaps even the chance to set our goals for the coming year.
As municipal leaders, the coming around once again of Christmas and New Year also reminds us of our ongoing commitment to the community. It highlights that another year is about to begin where we face the continuing challenge to assemble the infrastructure that will make Latrobe City attractive to the next generation of industries and employment providers, particularly the number of resource based projects that are mooted for the next decade.
Of course, all this must be balanced with the lifestyle aspirations of our community, which will be focussed upon in the fifteen-year strategic plan which Council will present in the New Year.
Christmas is also a time of communal gatherings ranging from those where a few fellow workers gather together to share joy and commemorate what they have achieved throughout the year, to large communal gatherings where people from all walks of life come together as a community to celebrate. Such gatherings remind us that we are all part of a community and play a part in the success of that community.
If one is allowed wishes for the New Year, mine would be that we continue to strengthen unity in Latrobe. For a community that is united is almost unstoppable, whether through enhancing our opportunities for prosperity or improving our collective lifestyle.
Over the next week or so, most of us will have the opportunity to take a break, to relax, to recharge our batteries. It is the time for putting life’s pressures behind us.
Most importantly, this is the time for family. It is the time for renewing friendships. It is the time to enjoy ourselves. So for now, please take it easy and enjoy the festive season.
