Bass Coast Local News:
Check the rules before clearing vegetation from your property

Changes to the rules regarding the removal of trees and vegetation.

By Portal Admin - 30th November 2020 - Back to News

The State Government recently announced changes to the rules regarding the removal of trees and vegetation on properties across most municipalities in Victoria, including Bass Coast. Until recently, property owners were able to remove vegetation, within 10 metres of a dwelling constructed before 2009 without a planning permit for bushfire protection purposes under the 10-30 rule.

Permits required for removal of protected vegetations

Under the new changes, the 10-30 rule now only applies to properties that are located within a declared Bushfire Prone Area. Permits may now be required for the removal of any vegetation in areas where vegetation protection controls are in place, such as:

  • Cape Paterson
  • Inverloch
  • Tenby Point
  • Whole of Phillip Island

Balance with the 10-30 rule

Bass Coast Shire CEO, Ali Wastie, is supportive of the changes to the 10-30 rule. "While we recognise the significance of the natural environment in our region, bushfire safety is also incredibly important and therefore, striking the right balance is essential," Ms Wastie said.

"We strongly encourage all residents to think carefully about tree and vegetation removal and to contact Council to check if the new rules apply to your property" Ms Wastie concluded. Before clearing any trees or vegetation, property owners should contact Councils Planning Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211 to check if the new rules apply to them. More information about these changes is available at vegetation management.
