Fire Preparation For Silverleaves

Bass Coast Shire Council will begin work on 7 December to improve access for fire fighting vehicles around the Silverleaves estate.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th December 2009 - Back to News

Phillip Island CFA Captain, Ray Champion said the works were vital to ensure the safety of residents and CFA volunteers.

"Council has been improving access to Silverleaves for a number of years," said Mr Champion.

"However it was recently identified by Council and the CFA that urgent works were required before the onset of bushfire season.

"To make sure we can attend to any fire incidents in the estate we need a three and a half metre clearance horizontally and a four metre clearance vertically so that a fire truck can get in.

"This work will also make it easier for other emergency services vehicles to attend emergencies in the area."

Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, James Bremner, said this was a positive outcome from the work that has been complete by Council, the CFA and the Municipal Fire Prevention Committee (MFPC).

"The MFPC’s role is to identify fire risks in the community and put measures in place to reduce or remove them.

"This work will make Silverleaves a safer place for those who live in or visit this community," explained Mr Bremner.

The works are expected to be noisy, however Council aims to get the works completed as quickly as possible to minimise any disruption or inconvenience to residents. For more information on the works contact Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
