Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the free entry for kids subsidy will make it even more affordable for Victorian families to visit Victoria’s zoos. The subsidy will reduce the cost of a full priced child’s ticket from $12.6 to $0. A family ticket will be reduced from $58 to $50.80. "During school holidays families look for low-cost ways to entertain the kids and provide them with a unique and fun holiday experience," Mr Northe said. "The Coalition Government is committed to easing cost-of-living pressures for Victorian families and is pleased to help out by making the zoo more accessible and affordable." Mr Northe said it was important that the wonderful learning and discovery experiences at our zoos were accessible and available to all Victorians. "This initiative will enable more families to enjoy the many experiences and wonders offered by Zoos Victoria." The initiative will grant children under 16 years of age free entry to three of Victoria’s great zoos, Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Zoo and Melbourne Zoo, on weekends, Victorian public holidays and Victorian school holidays from 1 July 2011. Children under 15 years of age must always be accompanied by an adult (over 17) for safety considerations. "The zoo is a fantastic place to take kids, encouraging them to appreciate and better understand wildlife conservation and environmental protection," said Mr Northe. "Creating greater access for parents, carers, guardians and grandparents to take children to zoos by reducing the costs, is an outstanding outcome from the Coalition Government." The announcement fulfils a key election promise for the Victorian Government and will take effect from 1 July, in time for the winter school holidays.
