Bass Coast Waste And Recycling Update

The new financial year brings changes to Bass Coast Shire Council’s waste disposal fees and a new recycling collection calendar for ratepayers.

By Bass Coast - 22nd June 2012 - Back to News

The 2012/13 recycling collection calendar is delivered to all residents and non resident ratepayers.

Infrastructure Director, Felicity Sist, said the community has improved their recycling efforts and use the calendars throughout the year for information about what to recycle and when.

"Residents put the calendar on their fridge because it displays all they need to know about Council’s waste collection services. This includes the weekly rubbish and fortnightly recycling collection and other services such as hard waste, green waste, public holiday and summer collection services," said Ms Sist.

"The annual green waste amnesty is very popular and Council offers this to encourage residents to clear their property and get ready for the fire season.

"From 1 November to 16 December 2012 residents can drop off green waste free of charge at all of our waste transfer stations. The calendar also shows the increase to weekly recycling services over December and January, to cater for our busy summer holiday period," said Ms Sist.

Also included on the calendar is information about alternate collection days for Christmas and Good Friday public holidays, a summary of how to go about organising a hard waste collection and handy information about what can be put in the recycling bin.

"When you check the bottom or the side of your plastic container, you may find a triangle with a number on it from one to seven.
"If the item has one of these numbers on it, you can put it in your recycle bin," explained Ms Sist.

Council’s waste services also include management of the Shire’s Waste Transfer Stations and landfill sites.

The cost of compliance in operating landfill sites has increased and levies have been imposed by the State Government Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for municipal waste and commercial and industrial waste.

"From the new financial year we will have to increase some of our fees at our Waste Transfer Stations and Landfill sites because of the additional costs Council has incurred for running these services," confirmed Ms Sist.

"We have considered the impact of increased costs and set a charge of $110 per tonne for disposal of municipal waste and $130 per tonne for commercial and industrial waste. We have retained a charge of $35 per cubic meter for disposal of general waste at Council Transfer Stations. However there will be an increase at Transfer Stations for disposal of green waste," said Ms Sist.

"Prices will go from $12 to $14 per cubic metre which is the first increase to green waste disposal fees since 2008."
