Bass Coast Shire Council will sponsor two people to attend the Having a Say Conference, held from 8 to 10 February 2012 in Geelong.

The conference is organised by the Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability (VALID). It provides people with disability the opportunity to ‘have a say’ about issues that affect their lives, and to develop strategies to address these issues.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Facilitator - RuralAccess, Katheryn Pryor, said that Council will sponsor two Shire residents with a disability or an interest in, and understanding of the issues experienced by people with a disability, to attend the Conference.

"Those wishing to nominate have up to Friday, 18 November 2011 to submit a nomination form. Council will fund the registration fee, accommodation and a small food allowance for the two successful nominations.

Ms Pryor explained that there are approximately 6,000 people with disability living in the Shire."Delegates attending the conference have an opportunity to meet others from around Australia and around the world.

"We hope the sponsored delegates will come back with some fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm to assist with continuing to improve access and inclusion for everyone living and visiting the Shire.

Highlights of the last conference included the Great Quiz, Individual Achievement sessions, Dreams and Aspirations workshop, Red Faces Talent Show, and the Come and Try activities," said Ms Pryor.

Salli Davidson, one of the sponsored delegates from the conference held earlier this year, found the nomination process very easy and felt privileged to be chosen.

"I met enthusiastic speakers at the conference anxious to get the advocacy message across and wonderful young people filled with hope and confidence of a bright, independent future. "I thoroughly enjoyed my participation and look forward to passing on all that I have learned," said Ms Davidson.

Nominations for sponsorship for the Having a Say Conference 2012 close on Friday, 18 November 2011. A Nomination Form can be downloaded from Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au. Alternatively contact Lisa Pettinella on 1300 BCOAST (226 278), or 13 36 77 for people with speech or hearing difficulties, to arrange a Nomination Form to be sent to you, or for assistance to complete the Nomination Form.
