Council’s Work Recognised By The Human Rights And Equal Opportunity CommissionMr Graeme Innes, Deputy Commissioner of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, visited Bass Coast Shire Council on Wednesday 24 October. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th October 2001 - Back to News Mr Graeme Innes, Deputy Commissioner of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, visited Bass Coast Shire Council on Wednesday 24 October. Mr Innes presented Council with a Certificate on behalf of the Commission that recognises Council’s work in making Bass Coast Shire an inclusive community.
During his visit, Mr Innes discussed the challenges to local government in ensuring that people of all abilities had access to all facilities and services. He commended Council on its approach, specifically in developing a Disability Action Plan and working with members of the community to achieve the Plan’s goals.
Cr Donald Cameron is Chairman of the Disability Action Plan Reference Group and accepted the Certificate on behalf of Council.
"Council is delighted that the Commission has recognised the whole of Council approach to workplace practices and strategies that address barriers and inequities facing people with disabilities," said Cr Cameron.
"We have been implementing the actions in the Disability Action Plan for some time now, but there is still more for us to achieve to ensure all citizens, regardless of ability can participate fully in the life of their community," he said.
Cr Donald Cameron accepts the Certificate of Recognition for Council’s work in making the Shire an inclusive community from Graeme Innes, Deputy Commissioner of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.
