Don’t delay immunisation

Wellington Shire Council is concerned that many parents are not keeping their children’s immunistation up to date.

By Wellington Shire Council - 25th July 2006 - Back to News

Recent reports from the Australian Childhood Immunisation register has demonstrated that many children are not receiving their four year old immunisations on time

Samantha Lowery, Environmental Health Officer said that the reports suggest that parents are instead waiting until the child is old enough to go to school.

"It is really important to keep to the schedule as it ensures children have adequate coverage against infectious diseases, especially whilst they are at kinder and playgroup."

The immunisations due once the child turn four are to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio and measles, mumps and rubella.

Immunisation History Statements will not be automatically issued until these immunisations have been reported to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register.

The History statements are required by law to be presented to primary schools when enrolling children.

"This enables the school to have a clear understanding of children’s immunisation status and allows the school to do the right thing by each pupil should an infectious disease be present in the school" said Ms Lowery.

Immunisations are available from the Wellington Shire Council Environmental Health Unit, telephone 1300 366 244 for session dates and times or visit the website www.wellington.vic.gov.au.

If your child has received four year old immunisations and you haven't received statement, contact the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register 1800 653 809, visit your Medicare office or contact Wellington Shire Council Environmental Health Unit.
