Ensay Landfill Community Update

A decision will be made soon on the future for waste collection and disposal for Ensay residents.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 23rd August 2004 - Back to News

On 10 August 2004, three East Gippsland Shire Councillors and several Officers met with a group of Ensay residents to discuss further, possible waste management options for the township and its surrounds. This was a follow-up to a meeting on 12 July on the same issue.

Council’s Group Manager Assets, Mr Phillip Davies advised the community that the expected ‘life’ of the landfill is limited to the capacity of the existing trench, which Officers anticipate will be reached at the end of August or early September.

"Recently there have been a number of fires at the tip site that have caused serious health concerns for local residents and dangerous conditions for those called to put them out," said Mr Davies.

"Fires are specifically prohibited at tips. These fires have not increased the life of the landfill and in fact, the most recent fire decreased the tipping volume at the site significantly, as the only way to extinguish it successfully was to smother it with a number of loads of soil."

"In the event that the tip will reach capacity and be required to close prior to the implementation of any new waste disposal services, which are yet to be determined, Council will provide a temporary transfer trailer service at Ensay in the interim," Mr Davies said.

The community preferences for waste management services in Ensay, along with several other options, have been assessed by Council’s Waste Management staff and will be the subject of a formal report to Council at its Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday, 25 August 2004 commencing at 2.00 p.m. at the Corporate Centre, Bairnsdale.
