Responding to concerns from the local community, and to representations made by the Council on its behalf, Major Projects Minister, The Hon. Peter Batchelor has confirmed the Government’s position that Dutson Downs has been ruled out for such waste.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Mr Batchelor rang me earlier today on behalf of the Government to reiterate that Dutson Downs is not in the equation for toxic waste. This is a terrific outcome for the Council and the community of Wellington.

"It’s great to see commonsense win through following the strong submissions we’ve made to the Government.

"Meanwhile, we will continue to monitor the proposed development of Dutson Downs as a recycling plant for low-level contaminated soils. We are expecting the Government to shortly release for public consideration Gippsland water’s application for works approval. We will look at this closely to ensure that the plans are suitable in relation to the special environment of the area in which it is proposed to locate the plant."
