Mayor’s Message

Ratepayers can be forgiven for thinking that the Council is lacking leadership and is in a state of disarray because most of the information available to the public is via the local media.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 26th July 2004 - Back to News

In some cases this has been portraying a one sided negative image of Council. There are lots of good things happening and I believe that Councillors and staff are working very hard to achieve good outcomes for the community.

The Planning Department has had a backlog of applications but time and energy have now produced a situation where the number of permits issued far outweigh the number of applications awaiting resolution. (Delays were also exacerbated by the hundreds of enquiries prompted by the rural zoning issue earlier in the year, and the subsequent avalanche of applications received.) This is a very good outcome that will continue, and reduce the time taken for a planning permit application.

Council has also made a decision to tackle the waste management issues in our small towns. This problem has been with us for many years with no plan for addressing the problems. A Sustainability Officer will be commencing very shortly to work with the affected communities to find workable solutions.

A decision has been made regarding the Corner Inlet Motor Cycle Track and the lease terms and conditions will be available shortly for public comment.

Other good news stories include:

  • Council’s approval for the Parks Victoria extension in Foster,
  • the acquisition of the Drill Hall for the Korumburra community
  • the Aquatic Centre is nearing completion, and the management contract will be put to tender shortly,
  • containment of rate rises while still maintaining services,
  • and open briefing sessions, including the budget, that allow our communities to be better informed on local council issues.

The list goes on.

Constructive criticism is essential to keep everyone on their toes and for the democratic process to be successful, but we also need balance.
