Expressions Of Interest To Be Invited On Courthouse Use

Expressions of interest from community and commercial organisations to determine prospective future uses of the Traralgon Courthouse will be invited later in September

By Latrobe City Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News

Following the adoption of the Traralgon Courthouse Conservation Management Plan at Monday night’s council meeting.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that constructive and positive feedback on the Traralgon Courthouse Conservation Management Plan had been received during the recent period of community consultation, and as such the community could now move forward in identifying opportunities for its future development, management and maintenance.

"The Traralgon Courthouse is an iconic building, familiar to many who visit the central business district of Traralgon. There is significant community interest in the building.

"Council engaged heritage consultant Ivar Nelson to prepare the plan, which provides an overview of the Traralgon Courthouse and Post Office complex’s historical background, and a detailed description of each room in the courthouse including a condition report and an updated statement of cultural value.

"The plan sets out a conservation policy for the Traralgon Courthouse and details a set of conservation actions which includes a list of maintenance priorities.

"Additionally, the plan provides an indicative brief and concept for future use of the Traralgon Courthouse which is in keeping with the conservation policy and the views expressed by community members through the consultation process.

"Any expressions of interest relating to future use of the courthouse will be required to detail the proposed development and in particular, explain how it would adhere to the conservation policy, respect the statement of cultural value and deliver the conservation actions contained in the conservation management plan," Cr Price said.

"Any action in respect to proposed developments would also need to be presented to council for consideration and would again require extensive community consultation prior to any formal approval being granted."

Advertisements calling for the expressions of interest are likely to be placed in the media towards the end of September.
