Serrated Tussock Control Grants Available

Wellington Shire Council is encouraging residents to apply for grants to help control Serrated Tussock.

By Wellington Shire Council - 20th March 2007 - Back to News

The grants, administered by the Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party, are available for private landholders to treat isolated infestations of Serrated Tussock on their property.

Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council said Serrated Tussock is often mistaken for a native grass.

"When you roll serrated tussock leaves between your index finger and thumb they role smoothly, like a needle. Native grass species usually feel as though they have flat edges"

"The most significant difference is shown in the way that serrated tussock seed heads form but as with most weeds it is really important to act before the plant goes to seed" said Cr Ripper.

Grants are available for fencing, pasture renovation, chemical or manual control, contractors or revegetation.

"These incentives will provide private landholders and community groups the opportunity to access funds to support long-term control programs to prevent any further spread of this highly invasive weed" said Cr Ripper.

Serrated Tussock infests about 82,000ha of land in Victoria, down from 130,000 in 1995. This reduction has been possible by co-ordinating efforts between Government Departments, community groups and individual landholders.

"By treating isolated infestations of Serrated Tussock early, millions of hectares of land can be protected from invasion," said Cr Ripper.

Application forms are available on Wellington Shire Council’s website or by contacting Annie Lamb on 1300 366 244 or Wendy Hayne on 03 5147 0852.
