Regional Aquatic Complex update

The $6.8 million redevelopment of Wellington Shire Council’s Regional Aquatic Complex in Sale is moving forward apace with the formation of a Project Control Group to oversee its development.

By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd May 2005 - Back to News

This recently-established seven-member group, comprised of council and Victorian Government representatives will act as a controlling group throughout the revamp process and will visit a number of similar recreation facilities around the state to gather ideas that will help guide the development of Wellington’s new facility.

The Victorian Government is providing $2.5 million for the swimming complex initiative under its Better Pools Program, with the council to provide the remaining $4.3 million with support from community contributions. A fundraising committee is set to be established shortly to help steer community-focused money-raising efforts.

Construction for the complex is set to begin in March 2006 with completion expected by February 2007 when the complex will enhance its position as the top regional leisure and recreation facility, benefiting all parts of the shire community and Gippsland as a whole.

Key features will include:

  • a learn to swim and beach entry toddlers pool;
  • a hydrotherapy/program pool;
  • new showers and changing room facilities;
  • new toilets;
  • new access, entry and foyer area;
  • a new gym, aerobics and cardio-fitness area;
  • a crèche facility.

The design concept and specifications for the upgrade have been developed following extensive community consultation.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "The council is delighted with progress made on this eagerly-awaited and substantial upgrade to the regional aquatic complex. The appointment of the Project Control Group will prove invaluable in helping to drive this initiative ahead and we look forward to the completion of the redevelopment.

"This is a very substantial investment for our shire community which many sporting groups, schools and residents will benefit from. We currently have residents from many remote locations such as Dargo making the trip to use the current facility and hope that use of this regional centre can be expanded upon when the redevelopment is completed."
