Music and art collide at the Gallery

Music and art have intermingled at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in a new exhibition by local artist John Abery called ‘Music, Music, Music’.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 7th July 2004 - Back to News

Abery’s background in carpentry is demonstrated in the exhibition pieces and all of the sculptures are highly influenced by his ongoing interest in music. There are twelve laminated wood sculptures in the exhibition which portray musicians in an orchestra and all of the sculptures also double as musical instruments.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that Abery’s interest in Surrealism is also revealed in his work.

"Abery’s sculptures are about memory, discovery and dreaming. In his sculptures the human form and musical instruments undergo a metamorphosis that suggests a nonsensical interconnectedness. The works symbolise the feeling of confusion when waking from a strange dream and they evoke the feeling that an important message from the unconscious self will be revealed if the random elements of the sculptures are significantly decoded," Ms Tegart said.

"John has spent most of his life as a carpenter at the local power station, however at the age of 49 he decided to go to art school. Initially John attended TAFE, however he went on to Monash University’s Gippsland Campus where he completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts in painting and sculpture. He will finish his Post Graduate studies in Visual Arts at the end of this year," Ms Tegart concluded.

‘Music, Music, Music’ will run at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 25 July. The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
