June Start For Mallacoota Streetscape ProjectWork on the proposed "Mallacoota Streetscape Project" will begin in June and cost a total of $150,000. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 19th April 2005 - Back to News Announcing the start of the project, East Gippsland Shire Council CEO Steve Kozlowski said that construction work could now get under way following a decision by Shire Councillors to fund fifty percent of the project.
"A grant has now been approved and the balance of the money will come from the State Government’s ‘Small Towns Development Fund’," Mr Kozlowski said.
"The result will be a point project, managed by the Shire that will create a significant enhancement of Mallacoota’s CBD that will provide a boost for retail business as well as a big lift for the overall aesthetics of the precinct."
Mr Kozlowski said this was part of a staged streetscape redevelopment and would involve resurfacing some existing footpath with terra cotta pavers and construction of a new path connecting Maurice Avenue and Allan Drive.
"The new path and landscape works will continue along Allan Drive to Buckland Drive, linking the two shopping areas."
"The areas in front of the Allan Drive shops will be extensively landscaped and work will also include reinstating the nature strip in Maurice Avenue and Allan Drive, replanting trees, and putting in planter boxes and shrubs, " he said.
"We’ll also add street furniture, shade structures, tree guards and cycle racks as well as reinstating the waste bins."
Mr Kozlowski said that as well as providing improved pedestrian access between the two groups of retail shops, the redeveloped walkway would create a far more pleasant and inviting environment for local residents and tourists.
"For visitors to the nearby caravan park, for example, it will be just a short stroll for an ‘al fresco’ coffee and snack in a very inviting environment," he said.
"It should also bring extra activity for local businesses as well as enhance the overall reputation of the Mallacoota township."
