Wellington Marks Record Number Of Pet Registrations

Wellington Shire Council wishes to thank residents for their overwhelming response to reminders to register their dogs and cats, which has resulted in a record 10,000 being registered over recent weeks.

To celebrate reaching this milestone, which is some 500 up on previous years, the council is rewarding the 10,000th pet this year – an 18-month-old black Labrador puppy called Bowser - with free registration for life.

Registering a dog or cat makes it much easier for the council to reunite a lost pet with its owner. The registration fee also helps to support pet-related services in Wellington such as animal control and community education about responsible pet ownership.

The standard fee for registration is $60.00, with a reduced fee of $20.00 applicable for de-sexed or microchipped pets, those aged over ten years, farm dogs and pets with an approved certificate of obedience. A further discount of 50% on these charges is available to pensioners who present a concession card.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "We’d like to thank all those conscientious pet owners out there who have registered their dogs and cats. It’s the only sure way to keep track of household pets and is invaluable to supporting the council’s pet-related services."

Meanwhile, anyone who has still to renew their registration is strongly urged to do so as soon as possible. This can be done over the counter at the council’s Maffra, Sale and Yarram customer service centres, as well as at any post office or post office sub-agency in the shire, or through the council’s web site www.wellington.vic.gov.au (click on ‘Payments’ on the home page top menu bar).
