Mayors Message

At the Council meeting last week, officers presented two reports.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 26th October 2004 - Back to News

The first was the Asset Management Strategy which outlines ways of making sure the community’s assets are well looked after and maintained, and include:

  • Infrastructure such as roads, drains, bridges etc.
  • Property such as shire owned halls, recreation reserves, street and park furniture etc.
  • Plant and equipment.

Council’s assets have been valued at $361 million with a replacement value of $492 million, so this is an enormous task in documenting, inspecting, repairing and upgrading these assets to achieve specified levels of service in the most cost effective way.

The second report was the Road Management Plan (R.M.P) which has been placed on exhibition for comment, and is also available on the Council website www.sgsc.vic.gov.au.

The Victorian State Government has introduced the Road Management Act which means that by January 2005 all Councils have to have a plan that

  • Lists all roads and their classification in a register
  • Inspects all roads to update the register
  • Specifies minimum levels of service for these roads.

This document will be on display for 30 days and every road that Council maintains is listed and has a minimum level of maintenance. The community is encouraged to take the opportunity to provide input to officers regarding these documents.

These documents have had considerable time and resource allocated them which will ultimately ensure best value in maintaining and replacing our assets for current and future generations.
