Facelift for Sporting FacilitiesPhillip Island Football Netball Club rooms at the Cowes Recreation Reserve gets a facelift. By Portal Admin - 8th January 2019 - Back to News Work has begun to upgrade the Phillip Island Football Netball Club rooms at the Cowes Recreation Reserve.
The $350,000 upgrade is being carried out as part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s 2018/19 Building and Open Space Renewal Program.
The work is expected to be completed by 31 March, 2019, just in time for the football season.
Council has worked closely with the Phillip Island Football Netball Club to complete the design of the upgrades.
The refurbishment works include new shower and toilet facilities, improved space and accommodation for trainers and medical staff, administration and coaches and upgrades to equipment storage areas.
The outside of the facility will be rendered and painted and will have a new Colorbond roof installed. The renovations will also include improvements to lighting and electrical systems and new floor coverings throughout.
The facility will also be made fully accessible through the upgrades.
The netball courts at both the Cowes and Bass Recreation Reserves will also be renewed in time for the 2019 netball season.
At Cowes, two new courts will be constructed, running in a north/south orientation to ensure they meet Netball Victoria requirements in relation to run off and space in between courts.
At Bass, a new competition court will be constructed and the existing court will be resurfaced. Both courts will meet Netball Victoria’s requirements. A new player and spectator shelter will also be built to provide protection from the weather and a great spot to view the games.
New flood lighting will be installed at both Cowes and Bass, to achieve the Australian standards required for netball training as well as new perimeter fencing.
The total project cost for the renewal of the Cowes Netball Courts is around $630,000, which includes $100,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV), through the Country Football and Netball Program.
The upgrade of the netball courts at Bass will cost around $475,000, which also includes a $100,000 grant from SRV as part of the Country Football Netball Program.
Overall, an investment of nearly $1.1 million between Council and SRV will see netball continue to flourish in Bass Coast.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the upgrades to the change rooms and netball courts will help create a healthy, connected and active community and provide a well maintained public facility.
"It is great to see these projects underway," Cr Tessari said.
"The existing change rooms at Cowes Recreation Reserve weren’t in the best condition so it is fantastic we are now able to provide the Phillip Island community with an updated, fully accessible facility.
"It is also important our netball players have safe and modern facilities in order to maximise participation and enjoyment.
"Council is committed to investing in our local sporting facilities and infrastructure, which we know also provides many benefits to the broader community."
