Council commits to Rawson mobile phone tower

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 5th September 2005 - Back to News

The Erica and Rawson communities will soon be receiving mobile telephone coverage, following a construction cost sharing agreement being reached between Baw Baw Shire Council and Telstra Countrywide to install a new phone tower at Parkers Corner, Rawson.

"Council has committed $55,000 this financial year to ensure this project proceeds," said Council Chief Executive Officer, Glenn Patterson.

"This contribution makes the facility economically viable for Telstra to construct", said Mr Patterson.

"The facility will be GSM (digital) as best advice is that this is the network that makes the project financially feasible. The phone tower will provide maximum benefit to visitors and tourists to the area, nearly all of whom have digital handsets.

"Subject to there being no unforseen issues, it is expected that the project will be implemented prior to the end of 2005, in time for the peak Christmas school holiday period", Mr Patterson added.

Cr David Balfour expressed his delight at Telstra’s decision.

"This is a great outcome for the Erica and Rawson communities. Congratulations to them – their persistence in agitating for this and making funding and other submissions over a long period of time has been rewarded," said Cr Balfour.

"The community, in conjunction with Council’s Economic Development Officer, Peter Kulich, have done a great job to secure this project".

Council are continuing discussions with Telstra in relation to extending mobile services to the Noojee and Walhalla districts, which in general terms would complete mobile coverage throughout the Shire.

"We are willing to contribute to the capital cost in those areas too, if that’s the difference that makes those facilities feasible for Telstra and brings this much needed service to those communities", said Mr Patterson.
