Bore water audit draws a line in the sand

WESTERNPORT Water’s new bore network is soon due to flow, but not before its engineers investigate the impact on the Corinella aquifer and on other bore users.

By Susan Webster - 27th February 2008 - Back to News

They will undertake a ‘bore audit’ on all bores within a 3km radius of Westernport Water bores at King Rd and Cemetery Rd. Then they will conduct a 60-day pump test.

Managing Director David Mawer explained: "We’re going to make sure that no other bore user is adversely affected by our bores coming on-line.

"If there is any impact, we will make sure they are compensated."

Project engineer Helden Leereveld said all bore users - stock, domestic and irrigation - will be contacted and visited over the next three weeks. "The bore audit will gather information including groundwater levels, bore depths and how individual bores are being used," he said.

The extent of the audit was specified by Southern Rural Water and the results of the survey will be shared with the groundwater supply authority.

"The information obtained will be extremely valuable to determine how the aquifer interacts as a whole, how much Westernport Water can sustainably extract and, if other bore users are impacted, the best method to compensate them.

He said compensation for any water loss could include providing water directly from the bore water pipeline, tankering bore water to individual properties or connecting water to stock troughs as well as providing concessions to water bills for any extra water used.

Mr Mawer added: "Our new bores are part of the overall plan to further secure water supply across the region.

"This audit gives us all a starting point and will act as the benchmark. We know groundwater is a shared resource and we are committed to using it responsibly."
