Search For Kinder Cluster Continues

Bass Coast Shire Council last night deferred a decision on the management of four kindergartens to allow for further meetings to be held.

The deferral is another step in a long process of investigating management options for the kindergartens in Inverloch, San Remo and Wonthaggi.

Acting Community and Economic Development Director, Antoinette Mitchell, said it was important to establish stable, sustainable and professional management for the kindergartens.

"The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development fund a cluster management initiative, which brings a group of kindergartens together under the management of one organisation," explains Ms Mitchell.

"Given Council’s strong commitment to early childhood education and the alignment with our Municipal Early Years Plan, it makes sense for us to work with the kindergarten committees to investigate the cluster management options that are available to them.

"Through this process, a number of options were identified, including management with an existing provider or Council taking on the management role."

The kindergarten committee’s preferred option is for Council to take on the cluster management of the kindergartens.

This was one of three options in a report put to Council at last night’s meeting, but a decision was deferred to allow further meetings to be held with other kindergarten cluster managers.

Ms Mitchell said despite early childhood education being a state government responsibility, Council was proud to support kindergartens and kindergarten committees.

"Our support is primarily focussed on providing facilities," said Ms Mitchell.

"We helped build a new kindergarten in Wonthaggi, we’re working with the Inverloch committee on building a new room and we’re currently building the Phillip Island Children’s Hub which will accommodate the Phillip Island Kindergarten.

"Work will also start soon at San Remo to expand the facility for kindergarten children."

Ms Mitchell thanked the kindergarten committees for their cooperation and work on the process so far.

A report and recommendation will now go to the June Council Meeting.
