Help Christmas card recycling effort

Wellington Shire residents are being encouraged to participate in a nationwide Christmas card recycling effort now underway – providing an ideal opportunity to dispose of no-longer needed greeting cards in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The Cards 4 Planet Ark initiative is being coordinated by the Planet Ark environmental group and is supported by a number of councils across Australia, including Wellington Shire.

Residents can pick up a Cards 4 Planet Ark postage-paid envelope from any participating Australia Post outlet (while stocks last), place their greeting cards inside and post it free at any post box.

Alternatively, greeting cards and envelopes can be deposited in dedicated Planet Ark recycling bins in the Coles supermarket in Gippsland Centre, Sale.

Every type of greeting card and envelope will be accepted.

For more information on card recycling locations in the Shire visit the web site www.recyclingnearyou.com.au and type in your postcode.

Since the nationwide campaign was launched over ten years ago, half-a-billion cards and envelopes have been recycled into new products like SAFE-branded toilet tissue – saving more than 50,000 trees in the process.

Said Wellington’s acting Chief Executive Officer Ralf Kastan: "We are pleased to lend our support to this very worthy initiative and would encourage residents who haven’t already disposed of their Christmas cards to take up this opportunity to help the environment through this recycling effort."

"This is also an ideal time for all Wellington households to make a New Year’s resolution to go green, recycle more and cut the waste sent to landfill."
