Wellington Shire Council is matched with Ghana as part of the ‘adopt a second team’ initiative.

The initiative links councils across Victoria with another Commonwealth nation as a first step to creating a cultural exchange through the Games.

Wellington residents are encouraged to support the Ghanaian athletes competing at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March.

Ghana is located on West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, only a few degrees north of the Equator.

Ghana covers an area of nearly 240,000 sq km and has a population approaching 20 million people.

The first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to gain its independence (in 1957) its industries include mining, lumbering, light manufacturing, aluminium smelting and food processing, while its key exports are gold, timber and cocoa.
