Wellington Shire Council is stepping up its efforts to ensure that pets throughout the shire are registered.

By Wellington Shire Council - 17th July 2006 - Back to News

Temporary signs have been erected around the shire advising the pubic that checks are being conducted

"Our officers will be out and about making checks and conducting door knocks to ensure that animals in Wellington are registered," said Tim Wise, Wellington Shire Council Field Service Coordinator.

"Registration is a key part of responsible pet ownership. We are encouraging pet owners to ensure they register cats and dogs for the safety and well-being of their animals.

In particular we are reminding people that cats need to be registered. Council impounds approximately 20 cats a month" said Mr Wise.

State legislation requires cats and dogs to be registered from the age of three months.

Dog and cat owners who have still not registered their pets face the possibility of a $215 fine.

Pet owners who have animals that have died or left the shire in recent years are urged to contact the council so records can be updated.

For more information about pet registrations and responsible pet ownership please telephone Wellington Shire Council on 1300 366 244.
