Middlemiss In Jobs Talks.Graeme Middlemiss, ALP Candidate for Morwell looks forward to Minister for Regional & Rural Development, Jacinta Allan making further announcements relating to the Latrobe Valley Advantage Fund included in the government’s Climate Change White Paper. By Howard Williams - 11th October 2010 - Back to News Graeme Middlemiss, ALP Candidate for Morwell looks forward to welcoming Minister for Regional & Rural Development, Jacinta Allan to the Latrobe Valley later this week. Minister Allan is expected to make further announcements relating to the Latrobe Valley Advantage Fund included in the government’s Climate Change White Paper.
Mr Middlemiss, who met with Minister Allan, Minister Batchelor and Minister Jennings last week said that he is in constant communication with the government to ensure that new jobs are created in the process of cleaning up our energy generation. "I am talking to them because we want to get it right. With the right investment in the right places, new jobs will come online." Mr Middlemiss said he was pleased at the recent progress on the HRL dual gas plant.
Mr Middlemiss said he while he was encouraged by sitting member Russell Northe’s support of the White Paper in parliament, more proactive and consistent leadership is required. "Our community leaders need to be clear and consistent on this issue, otherwise we could lose vital investment dollars." Mr Middlemiss said that if the global CEO of BHP says there needs to a price on carbon, it’s obvious that the Nationals ‘head in the sand’ approach is not going to work.
Mr Middlemiss said he is encouraged by Minister Allan’s commitment to finding jobs for the Latrobe Valley community. "When the National Party helped Jeff Kennett to privatise the electricity industry there wasn’t any real consultation with the community – they just sold it all off. I take my leadership role in the Valley seriously, I’ll be working with all ministers to ensure that this time the community is involved."
Mr Middlemiss also said that the circumstances this time are very different. "We are talking about an energy industry transformation that will take at least 50 years. That’s why this early work is so important."
