Victory Park footbridge to undergo rehabilitation worksBy Latrobe Shire Council - 7th January 2005 - Back to News The northern footbridge over Traralgon Creek in Victory Park will be closed for approximately ten weeks from Monday 17 January 2005 for some necessary rehabilitation works. Access paths lead to the footbridge from the band pavilion and from Peterkin Street opposite Gwalia Street.
Latrobe City’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Philip Marsh, said that although the footbridge closure may cause some inconvenience to local residents, it was necessary to close the footbridge to pedestrians while the work was being undertaken.
"Pedestrians will have alternative access over Traralgon Creek via the Argyle Street Bridge as well as the southern footbridge in Victory Park which crosses from Newman Park," Mr Marsh explained.
"Victory Park is a popular area with visitors and families, especially during the summer months. In particular, we recognise that there are likely to be large numbers of visitors to the park for the Australia Day celebration and the Big Wave Concert - Tsunami Appeal. While the footbridge closure is regrettable, we are confident there will be minimal inconvenience to these events.
"Importantly, the link with Newman Park playground, toilets, barbecue facilities and car parking, will not be affected," Mr Marsh said.
Mr Marsh added that Council would ensure that there was adequate signage in the park and on the roadside to remind pedestrians of the footbridge closure and the alternative access points.
The rehabilitation works are expected to be completed at the end of March 2005.
