Kurnai Welcome Northe As Principal For A Day

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has swapped Parliament for the Principal’s desk today to support the popular Principal for a Day initiative.

By Russell Northe - 24th August 2011 - Back to News

Visiting Kurnai College campuses in Morwell and Churchill, Mr Northe had the opportunity to meet with campus principals, staff and students for the national event.

Principal for a Day commenced in Australia in 2001 and is currently delivered annually in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Mr Northe said the mission of Principal for a Day is to increase and strengthen relationships, based on knowledge and understanding, between the private sector and education.

"Principal for a Day is a great way for those in business or government to experience the unique environment and challenges of the education sector.

"Previously when I have been involved in Principal for a Day, I had the opportunity to visit Schools such as Morwell Park Primary School which was a terrific experience. This year I am at Kurnai College’s Morwell and Churchill campuses, which are great education facilities."

While visiting Kurnai College, Mr Northe visited the Hands on Learning Program, an in-school early intervention program that significantly increases attendance and retention of students in the middle years more at risk of becoming early school leavers.

Students involved in the program work on creative building projects that benefit the school and local community - developing confidence and a sense of personal achievement.

Mr Northe said the program is a big factor in keeping some at-risk students at school.

"It is a great program, as it provides extra support to those students who need it.

"Kurnai is planning some really interesting projects for the students, including building a hot house, a vegetable garden, picnic tables, and reconditioning second hand push bikes to donate back to the community.

"The Hands on Learning Program is just one of many vital programs delivered by our local Schools and I commend teachers, staff, volunteers and of course Principals for their ongoing dedication in endeavouring to achieve the highest possible educational outcomes for our children.

Principals in particular have wide ranging responsibilities and duties and the Gippsland region is blessed to have in its midst some of the most dedicated and innovative Principals.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved with Principal for a Day here at Kurnai, and I encourage others in the community to put their hand up for this great program next year."
