Bass Coast Mayor, Peter Paul, CEO, Allan Bawden and Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente attended the meeting

Cr Paul said that it was a very constructive meeting where Council received a favourable hearing.

"We discussed a range of strategic road projects and road safety concerns that have been raised by the community over a number of years," said Cr Paul.

"The main reason for our meeting was to discuss the impact the desalination traffic is having on our local roads.

"The Minister recognised that the construction of the desalination plant is having an affect on our local roads.

"We talked about the condition of the Bass Highway and South Dudley Road that have been most affected by desalination traffic.

"The Minister confirmed that rehabilitation of 9.5km over the 30 km section of the Bass Highway between Anderson and Inverloch will commence in November costing approximately $1.25 million.

"We are very pleased with the commitment of the Minister to improve the Bass Highway.

"The works will range from major patching to resurfacing and will be undertaken in a range of locations.

"The Minister also agreed to consider assisting Council with the works needed on South Dudley Road," continued Cr Paul.

Council also discussed the following issues at the meeting with Minister Pallas:

  • the completion of the Bass Highway project from King Road to Phillip Island Road
  • construction of the Koo Wee Rup by-pass that would connect the South Gippsland Highway with the Princess Freeway
  • dealing with growth in Bass Coast and planning for the future of arterial roads in Bass Coast
  • pedestrian crossing facilities in Wonthaggi, Dalyston, Kilcunda and Phillip Island Road
  • improvements to bicycle facilities in Bass Coast.
