Moe to host Rural Women’s SymposiumMoe has been selected to host the Gippsland Combined Rural Traders (CRT) Women’s Symposium in March 2004. By Latrobe City Council - 14th January 2004 - Back to News Similar symposiums have been conducted in Echuca, Hamilton, Warrnambool and throughout other states, by CRT, which represents rural traders throughout Australia, including fourteen throughout Gippsland.
Latrobe City Investment Manager, Leo Billington, said that the symposium, planned for 18 March, aimed to raise many of the most current issues confronting women’s roles throughout rural towns and communities.
"These issues will include understanding how drought and fire have impacted on farms, towns and the businesses located within these communities.
"Here in Gippsland, our affected communities are quite widespread and CRT, through its Gippsland members, has initiated an opportunity for women to share their experiences and work towards assisting each other to deal with crisis situations," Mr Billington explained.
Anne Gooding, who with husband Leigh, owns and operates Moe Grain and Farm, will take a lead role in organising the Moe symposium.
The day will feature key speakers including Tracey Wickham and Lyn Sykes, who has 16 years experience as a relationship counsellor focusing on farming families. "We also propose to conduct a session about balancing work and leisure, so with our high profile speakers, women from Gippsland will learn a great deal from a range of inspirational people," Ms Gooding said.
Ms Gooding is well qualified to know about women in rural communities, as she has come from a farming background and has experienced the highs and lows of rural life. She is also a member of the Latrobe City - Wellington Shire Women in Business Network.
Now running her own business and dealing face to face with people from rural communities, Ms Gooding is involved in regular discussion with them and hears first hand about the juggling act of trying to support husbands and partners as they work the land, whilst also attending to the needs of family life.
According to Ms Gooding, the CRT Rural Women’s Symposium will be an occasion for women to connect, network and learn from each other.
"It’s great that women these days are not tied down anymore and they have more to say than they used to. This symposium gives women the chance to get out and meet others in similar situations, swap life experiences and learn from the guest speakers," Ms Gooding concluded.
