Hefty Fine For Commercial Scallop Fisherman

A Lakes Entrance licensed scallop fisherman has been convicted and fined $6,000 in the Bairnsdale Magistrates’ Court for failing to comply with the conditions of his commercial fishing licence.

By Department of Primary Industries - 30th July 2007 - Back to News

The court was informed that a detailed examination by Fisheries Victoria into the Victorian commercial scallop industry revealed that the fisherman had committed a number of breaches against the Fisheries Act by not adhering to conditions of his commercial scallop licence.

During the 2005 Victorian scallop season, the Lakes Entrance fisherman knowingly provided false and misleading information to Fisheries Victoria as to the weight of scallops actually landed.

Senior Fisheries Officer Peter Simpson said, "When operating a commercial fishing licence it is very important that licence holders comply with legislation and their licence conditions. The commercial scallop fishery is managed under a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) to ensure the sustainability of the fishery. Reporting of accurate weights are fundamental to the effective operation of this management control."

Members of the public who observe any suspected illegal fishing activity are reminded to call Fisheries Victoria’s reporting hotline 13FISH (133 474) any time, seven days a week.
