Indigenous Storytelling @ The LaneThe art and culture of seven Aboriginal people who live in the Latrobe Valley is currently on display at the Latrobe Regional Gallery. By Latrobe City - 29th July 2013 - Back to News Ronald Edwards (Gunnai/Kurnai) who works at the gallery delivering Indigenous culture programs to school groups curated the exhibition.
"I invited Vicki Prudence Foy, Rachel Mullet, Jenny Solomon, Lynette Solomon Dent, Phillip Solomon and Gloria Whalan to participate in this exhibition because I wanted to showcase indigenous art from a variety of other areas.
In South Eastern Victoria, traditional designs carry many levels of meaning: identity, country and stories.
"Designs from this area are mostly lines, forming triangles and diamonds as well as cross-hatch patterns. These designs have been passed down from generation to generation through the stories told in their art-making," Mr Edwards said.
"Designs from other areas are different, as you can see in this exhibition. I want people to understand that Aboriginal people have different markings and different stories, and different language groups all across Australia and that not all Aboriginal art has dots.
"It is important that we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and share our cultural knowledge with the non-indigenous community.
"Through this understanding of different cultures we can move forward together to achieve reconciliation," Mr Edwards concluded.
The exhibition continues until 4 August and Mr Edwards is available to discuss indigenous art and culture while the exhibition is on show on Thursdays in the gallery.
