A delegation from the Takasago Chamber of Commerce and Industry visited Latrobe City on Tuesday as part of the ongoing activities associated with the Sister City relationship between Takasago and Latrobe.In welcoming the twenty-five member delegation, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, said he was looking forward to new friendships being developed. “When we visited Takasago in October last year to sign the Sister City agreement, the theme promoted by Takasago City was ‘New Century – New Friendships’. “Visits such as this one further enhance our relationship with Takasago as a City, and importantly, new friendships are created at the personal level,” Cr Hanning said. The visit is the first major visit by members of industry and commerce from Japan since the establishment of the BCLV in Morwell in the 1980’s. According to Cr Hanning, the growth of the Sister City relationship with Takasago will see further visits in the future. “One of the key elements of our relationship with Takasago is the agreement to pursue activities associated with industry,” Cr Hanning explained. “The main purpose of the visit is to learn about Latrobe City and its strengths in the areas of commerce and industry. In addition, the opportunities for mutual benefit in economic development are tremendous,” Cr Hanning said. The next exchange between the two cities will be the student exchanges scheduled for later this year. As part of this program, ten Latrobe City students from years 7 and 8 travel to Takasago in September.
