Dig In For National Tree Day

Create a green and pleasant Shire by planting a tree in Wellington on National Tree Day

By Karen Gregory - 16th July 2002 - Back to News

Create a green and pleasant Shire by planting a tree in Wellington on National Tree Day.

The call is out for everyone to don hat, gloves and sturdy footwear between 10am and 12 noon Sunday 28 July and to head for venues across the Shire earmarked for tree-planting.

Wellington Council is encouraging community groups, individuals or organisations to contact them to arrange tree planting parties across the Shire.

Council will provide the trees for planting at three venues so far, but would be happy to arrange more.

These are:

· Between Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt, Sale – where scouts will keep energy stoked with a sausage sizzle

· At Licola Camp, Macalister River – the Lions Club will be on hand to assist

· Along Castleburn Creek – Dargo Primary School is taking part

"More than 110,000 volunteers across Australia were involved in planting trees last year, and we’re very keen to make sure we do our best for Wellington," said Environmental Planner Natalie Liddell.

"National Tree Day is a fun day for all the family. It gives children a chance to plant something that will grow with them and parents the chance to build a better environment for future generations."

In addition to sensible clothing, participants should remember to bring plenty of drinking water, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Anyone interested in joining in on the day should contact Natalie Liddell on 5142 3363 to register their interest.
