By East Gippsland Shire Council - 13th January 2004 - Back to News

Australia Day awards ceremonies are being held at various townships throughout the Shire, with Lakes Entrance this year hosting the official regional function where East Gippsland Shire’s awards will be announced.

The three major awards to be presented will be the East Gippsland Shire Citizen of the Year, Young Person of the Year and Community Event of the Year.

Dan Romanis has been Chief Executive Officer at Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) since 1994. RDNS is Australia’s largest provider of home nursing and the largest employer of community nurses, with a staff of over 1,000.

Dan’s previous roles encompassed leadership and management positions with State Government in education, public works and state treasury.

With strong skills and interests in leadership, technology and governance in the not-for-profit sector, Dan has managed a major re-shaping of the organisation during his time at RDNS, marrying the essential traditional healthcare qualities of caring and compassion with a comprehensive range of business initiatives.

Dan holds formal qualifications and memberships including:

· BSc (Hons) in Economics and Technology;

· Graduate Diploma in Management; and

· Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.

As a member of the (honorary) managing board, Dan was Treasurer of the Australian Council of Community Nursing Services for three years. More recently he has served as a volunteer Board and Executive Committee member of Peninsula Hospice Service, a leading palliative care provider on the Mornington Peninsula.

From 1999 to 2003 Dan was a volunteer surveyor with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards as a result of his interest in and commitment to improvements in quality standards in healthcare provision.

In 2003, Dan was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through the RDNS.

English by birth, Dan came to Australia in 1974 and proudly became an Australian citizen in 1985. He’s a long time resident of the Dandenongs – where he has lived with his family for almost 30 years.

In his spare time Dan enjoys camping in the Victorian high country and the Australian outback in the company of family and friends.

The venue and times for the Lakes Entrance Australia Day awards will be finalised within the next week.
