Cultural Arts On Display At GalleryAn exhibition by students from the GippsTAFE Koorie Department, Morwell is currently showing in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery at Latrobe Regional Gallery until Wednesday 7 December. By Latrobe City Council - 14th November 2005 - Back to News Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that the exhibition ‘Thindu Werna (This is us)’ features a mix of contemporary and traditional Gunai/Kurnai styles and designs by students graduating in Certificate IV Cultural Arts.
"The Koorie Unit program is designed to raise student skills and provide employment opportunities in both Koorie and mainstream communities. The course provides students with expertise to enable them to work in visual arts and contemporary crafts industries," Ms Tegart explained.
"Also included in the exhibition is the work of students from Thaingatti and Daingutti (NSW) and Lia Pootah (Tas). Personal narratives and stories about the Gunai/Kurnai people feature prominently in the work which includes painting, drawing, wood burning and screen printing. A digital presentation of photographs is also on display," Ms Tegart concluded.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
