Change to Rate Payments

Rate notices for the Wellington Shire Council and a leaflet outlining where rates monies are spent are currently being sent to all Wellington Shire property owners this week.

By Wellington Shire Council - 8th September 2006 - Back to News

Rates are payable in four installments during the year, the first being due by 30 September.

Residents can pay additional installments at any time provided they are paid before the due dates shown on the rate notice.

"This is a change from the past practice of accepting the full payment in February, and residents need to read their Rates Notices carefully," said Mr Lyndon Webb, Chief Executive Officer for Wellington Shire Council.

Another major change for ratepayers this year will be that the standard $148 municipal charge levied on all ratepayers has been dropped.

Revenue from rates and charges has increased an average of 6.95% over last year to meet rising costs and maintain adequate services.

"Council’s expenditure for the coming year will be almost $51 million," said Mr Webb.

"Just over half of Council’s income comes from rates. The rest comes from other sources including state and federal government grants. We expect to be successful in raising $23 million from these sources this year," said Mr Webb.

"The remaining $28 million must come from rates so we can continue to provide for the needs of our community"

"Council provides extensive day-to-day services including roads, libraries, immunisations, recreational facilities, parks and gardens, public toilets, and footpaths. There are also major projects including redevelopment of Stockyard Point at Port Albert, Victoria Park in Maffra and the development of West Sale Aerodrome."

"It is important to understand that the revenue raised through rates is based on the amount needed by Council to run the Shire. It is not based on any rises or falls in property valuations"

Rates can be paid either by BPAY, at Australia Post offices, by mail, direct debit, on the council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au, or in person at the council’s Sale and Yarram service centres,

For more information on payment options please refer to the back of the Rates Notice or visit the website.

For enquiries about rates you can call the council on 1300 366 244, or email rates@wellington.vic.gov.au

Alternatively ratepayers can drop into the council’s Sale or Yarram Service Centre.
