Wilsons Promontory National Park upgrades on inadequate infrastructure need to be expedited by Allen Labor government says Melina Bath

Raised concerns in State Parliament about inadequate infrastructure at Wilsons Promontory National Park despite its status as a top tourist destination, urging the government to expedite promised upgrades.

The inadequate condition of Parks Victoria infrastructure at Wilsons Promontory National Park has been highlighted in State Parliament by The Nationals. Wilsons Promontory National Park is a much loved destination enjoyed by locals, domestic and international tourists. Recently Squeaky beach has been recognised as Australia's best beach for 2024 by Tourism Australia.

Outdated prom facilities

Speaking in State Parliament, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Public Land Use and The Nationals Melina Bath said the granite boulders, pristine beaches, turquoise water, wildlife and breathtaking views make Wilsons Promontory an enchanting tourist destination, however visitor infrastructure is not up to standard.

"Given the importance of Wilsons Promontory to the state's tourism economy it is essential that the Allan Labor government act on the park's aged infrastructure to reflect its status. The less attractive side of the Prom is one which greets tourists arriving at Tidal River public toilets which can only be described as antiquated.

"The facility is decades old, there's stained toilet seats, damaged doors and an out of order disability toilet. It's an embarrassing look for a location with international and world heritage values, and which is home to Australia's best beach 2024," Ms Bath said.

Delayed prom upgrades

Ms Bath said in 2022 the Labor government committed funding to improve the visitor experience, but Victorians are yet to see the upgrades materialise. "Two years on from Wilsons Prom Revitalisation project announcement, Labor promised it would rejuvenate the information centre, cafe, toilets, cabins and walking tracks.

"We love our Wilsons Prom National Park and the fabulous rangers and staff who serve visitors, but it is time to get on with bringing the facilities into the 21st Century. I am calling on the Allan Labor government to expedite these vital infrastructure improvements, so Wilsons Promontory National Park facilities are as good as its world class beaches," said Ms Bath.
