Phillip Island Road Path Extension

Bass Coast Shire Council has begun works on a 2.4km shared path between Forrest Caves and Sunderland Bay Road.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st July 2009 - Back to News

Council Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente said the construction of the path is the missing link that will connect The Esplanade, Surf Beach to Sunderland Bay Road.

"The construction of this missing link will connect two sections of shared pathway allowing people to walk or ride on a shared path from San Remo all the way to Cowes", said Mr Piasente.

"Walking and riding are by far the two most popular recreational activities for residents in Bass Coast, so it’s a real plus to be able to complete this path.

"Current works include vegetation removal, minor drainage works and the laying of a gravel pathway," explained Mr Piasente.

Council applied for a planning permit to remove the vegetation which was advertised and displayed in April 2009.

"Council is working with indigenous vegetation consultants to help us make sure that there is more indigenous vegetation on the Island than when we began work on the path," said Mr Piasente.

"We’ve identified possible locations for the revegetation to be in Rhyll, Ventnor or on the corner of the Esplanade and Phillip Island Road."

Council will be seeking further funding to construct a concrete pathway.

"We’re also currently completing concreting works outside the Surf Beach General Store which links the bus stop area and picnic table to the pathway. These works are due to be completed by the end of June.

"We are keeping any disruption to pedestrians and vehicle traffic to a minimum, but we do apologise for any inconvenience," said Mr Piasente
